Why leave it to charity?

It is only when they are gone that you miss them. News that Centre Against Abuse was closing because of shortfalls in funds typifies what is happening in the charitable sector at the moment.

There is a terrible shortage of funds as donations and grants dry up or are diverted elsewhere, such as the new hospital wing.

The Centre Against Abuse provided a unique service in Bermuda and you have to wonder why such an important issue was left to a charity?

  1. It’s a good question. Why indeed.

Without real knowledge of how Govt’s across the world think, it’s tempting to think that their approach is “why should we” if there is a charity that will fill the void and take up the need.

In part, I can live with that, but only if Govt’s formally recognise those charities that are essentially carrying out a much needed and society-wide role, and contribute $$. And by contribute, I don’t mean arbitrary or discretionary grants, but actually sitting down with those charities and working out a workable formulae.

In that way, we might also avoid the 99% of income goes to salaries/op costs problem.
