This case was in court this morning A third conviction for DWI – where the offender was given a three-year driving ban.
Is that sufficient deterrence? No, it is not. I don’t know what the law states and whether it is possible to give a stiffer sentence.
If Bermuda is to get serious about the DUI epidemic, road safety campaigns alone will not be enough. The law has to mirror the seriousness of the crime and if it does, those dishing out the sentences should be using the law to its full effect.
We are seeing 25-year plus sentences for murderers, which sends out the strongest possible message. We must send out the strongest possible message to offences such as DUI if we are to have a glimmer of hope of defeating the DWI scourge.
UPDATE: I got this from Dwayne Caines at the BPS: It is DWI driving whilst impaired…. The law is fine, the magistrate needs to be brave and give the maximum penalty
