Small businesses need help as well – and the rebuttal

For me, this is quite timely – but only because I was going to write a blog on what I perceive are the obstacles to setting up a small business here in Bermuda.

The US Consul General’s initiative is to be welcomed and it is to his credit that Robert Settje is contributing to Bermuda in such a way.

But despite things like the EEZs and payroll tax relief for employing people, there is still much more that could be done to support new and fledgling businesses.

The Rebuttal:

Yesterday’s opinion article is quite timely as it provides me with the opportunity to both highlight the many resources available to entrepreneurs as well to clarify the support available to new and fledgling businesses.

Tangible help. The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation [BEDC] supports the development of entrepreneurship for small and medium enterprises and all businesses established in an Economic Empowerment Zone [EEZ] with:

  1. Hi Jeremy – I realize I am joining this discussion somewhat late but did want to add two cents. One of my big complaints is with TCD as a small business sole proprieter farmer a truck is crucial to my business – without it I would probably be out of business – My application was finally approved and I had to pay a $1000 fee on top of lic and ins. and I was issued a TEMPORARY permit – every year I need to reapply providing TCD with an account of my business dealings to show I still require a truck – this month will be the THIRD year I have had to do this! (besides, who at tcd has any business acumen to access my business in the first place!) rather than assisting me the Govt is like a buzzard circling over my head – these are the same TCD policies that were put in place when Bda was a BOOMTOWN! It seems no one has told them that we have been in an economic depression for , oh, about 6 YEARS !!!! My opinion is they should post someone at the gat of TCD that hands out permits for free to anyone driving by that wants a commercial vehicle to start a small business – that would be encouragement!

    1. I understand totally. Some people think my column means that I want a hand-out. I don’t. Thankfully I did not need one. But there are people, like you perhaps, who need a break or a leg up to make sure you can continue in business. Problem, we are in a vicious circle: Govt has no spare cash ….
