Football (soccer) world gone mad, Updated

There is nothing, absolutely nothing that can justify these salaries for people whose brains are generally in their boots and who only kick a bloody ball once a week for 90 minutes for a living.

It is a joke, a pretty sick joke at that.

115,000 pounds sterling a week? Give me a break. Disgusting.

UPDATE: come on, what can justify this? And ..  it is a LOAN deal! FFS

Where are our priorities?

  1. It’s insane money indeed. Guys are paid so much in professional sports.

The only thing that I think about in an attempt to justify it all is that they *do* provide entertainment to the masses, which then translates to higher gate receipts, of which a portion (far smaller than for the players and owners of course) gets filtered to the vendors, security personnel, medical staff, administrators, custodians. I’m sure that there are economic models that can be used to validate it all to an extent.

But yes, it still grinds my gears when you hear about pro athletes ‘struggling’ or ‘needs to provide for their family’ when you consider the cash they rake in.

  2. These guys have a genuine skill. Yes, it is a heck of a lot of money – but compare it to so many CEOs who pull down millions a year – for what?

      1. Yeah – that’s the point. They get paid loads of money to increase the share price. But share prices have overall been static for the last 10 years. They clearly fail. And why are US and UK CEOs worth so much more than European and Asian CEOs?

“…Rampant short-termism, the determination to keep the share price as high as possible, even at the cost of future R&D and company pension funds, has nothing to do with developing sustainable businesses that benefit all stakeholders.”

I have no problem with the Steve Jobs, James Dysons, real entrepreneurs of this world, but most CEOs are just all about market hype – snake-oil sellers.

      2. Compared to the likes of Fred the Shred, Kenneth Lay and Dick Fuld, Wayne Rooney is worth every penny. And I don’t like football. 🙂

      3. Nah, CEOs around the world get less than footballer and they are not all bad – but they ensure employment for a heck of a lot of people, don’t get in the limelight, don’t let off fireworks, get pissed if someone does not sing them happy birthday et etc
