The Royal Gazette is not allowing comments on this story about increased fees for BIU members, so I am posting it in the hope of generating some debate.
I am sure there is more to the story than meets the eye, but on the face of it the content of this letter seems to point to a ‘do as I say not as I do’ attitude within in the Bermuda Industrial Union.
The union preaches consultation, equality, fair practice, workers’ rights etc – but if this letter is true, it does not put those principles into practice.
Why is this important? Well, it is difficult for people to take seriously those who appear hypocritical.
Union leader Chris Furbert has promised to hold a press conference today (Monday) or tomorrow. I will look forward to his explanation, as I suspect will other union members who have had to take pay cut, freezes and furloughs.
By the way, will any journalist be brave enough to ask: when did the BIU last present its accounts and have the BIU leadership had pay rises and if so, by how much?
