Update: I had some very spirited discussions on FB about this yesterday. The upshot seemed to be that everyone was behind the idea. Great. Now show some action. It could be the one percent that makes a difference.
How many people ask themselves, ‘what if’? I know I do, although I am trying to train my head to stop me saying it. I am also trying to live by the motto ‘what I need, not what I want’.
The America’s Cup is another matter. What if we don’t get it, yes, we want it and yes, we need it.
So why isn’t a national campaign (through groups, newspapers, talk shows etc) gathering strength on these shores to make sure those incredible yachts are visible in the Great Sound. I don’t get it. I really don’t.
It could be the single biggest thing ever to happen in or for Bermuda. The riches it would bring – in terms of hard cash and hard publicity – would be enormous.
Yet I sense no excitement on the streets. Why?
Government is doing its bit and by the looks of things we are down to the last three. Last THREE BERMUDA!!!!! It is one of the THE sporting events in the world.
Come on! Do you really want to look back and say ‘what if’?
UPDATE: I had this exchange on FB:
Response to my headline: prob the same reason the whole country is not behind Cupmatch or Bermuda Day. Cultural differences
Me: But this should bridge that as it is about the economy! Money and jobs – two things everyone has/should have in common?
Responder lets be real..we are all down for money.. but socially we are not even all invited to RBYC so who is to blame here? I dont mind helping but dont tell me I am helping the rich get rich and then when all is said and done I am not treated equally”
We live in an unbalanced social environment.. we do not see balance during cupmatch nor Bermuda Day.
So who has to cross the floor here?
Me: How about a meeting in the middle? Commonsense does not have sides?
Responder: IDK mate every idea we put forth is thrown out the door so.. talk to those who need to walk in the middle. Personally I will do what i can to help promote it
Me: Don’t know what IDK means ….. but we just drop this, offer no support and see the huge amounts of money that will benefit the whole island go somewhere else. Makes no sense to me. Cutting off nose to spite face…..
Responder Jeremy if do not see why there is a cultural difference which translates to this event then you are not willing to address the root cause of why we do not have cross pollination of all events. When Carifta was here we were told it was a waste of money and nothing good comes out of it. Why didnt you speak up then?
Me I did. I wrote several editorials on it, praising it and asking people to support it
