A wake up call no-one will listen to

This story should really serve as a wake up call, but it won’t

There are a few people out there who will read it, understand the implications and possibly do something about it. The majority will probably turn the page it was on, or click on another story, and forget it.

For years now I’ve thought that Bermuda could – and should – play a leading role in this issue by forming an alliance with other small island nations to bang on the doors of our larger neighbours and tell them that, while they have a big land mass, we don’t.

Bermuda could lead the alliance thus putting itself on the map globally, it could host conferences here, it could encourage more research to be based here.

Yes, the Government does have other major issues to deal with, but it will have even bigger ones if, due to global warming, Cat 3 hurricanes become a Cat 4 and there is little or no coral reef to protect us.

  1. I think I mentioned opportunities for Bermuda to take a role within SIDS (http://www.sids2014.org/) this year and in the past, but I suspect that as a dependent territory we’re forced to be reliant on the UK to take up the fight on our behalf.

Odd of course, because Bermuda should be poised to be somewhat of a leader in the discussions that directly involve small island countries.

      1. It shouldn’t at all.

Problem is, just like we don’t have a Road Rules champion in Government, we don’t have a Sustainable Environment champion either.

The most prominent voices in Bermuda in regard to Sustainable Development and the Environment are Stuart Hayward, and the Greenrock organisation, neither of which have significant clout or influence within Government to press forward 😦
