Are we paying for this slander action? Updated

UPDATED: I’m glad this has been announced:

There is so much to write about – I just don’t have the time!

But this quote stood out to me in the papers today: “The spokesman explained that the legal action was being pursued by Government rather than Mr Cannonier as a private individual because the allegations were made against him in his capacity as Premier.”

I am not a legal expert but as a journalist I do know something about libel – and I did not think you could slander a Government? You can only slander an individual (those who know better please inform me….)

If that is the case, does this also mean that Government is paying for  this? It is an enormously expensive exercise, it is often the thing that stops individuals suing newspapers. Newspapers have deeper pockets and often insurance.

If Government is paying then why the **** should I – and you – subsidise legal action arising from puerile politics?

Excellent post from Catch a Fire:

  1. I think you’re right, Jeremy, This is the same approach that Ewart Brown and Derrick Burgess took over the court building and it was eventually stopped. The same argument was used to legitimize that libel action. The alleged slander is against the individual/s not the government, which will go on regardless of who is Premier.

  2. I posted many of the links relevant to this on my Twitter account, as I am also writing a post on this. Thought they’d be a handy reference as it was about 0300hrs where I’m too at the time. Which is not a good time for writing posts…. 🙂
