Gaming referendum question – loaded?

I can’t help but feel the question for the gaming referendum next year is a bit loaded: “Do you favour the introduction of regulated casino gaming for the purposes of creating new jobs for Bermudians and encouraging hotel development.”

As one person replied to me on my Twitter account: “if you vote no – this cardboard box will be crushed.  It may or may not have a kitten in it.”

Mmmmm.

Shadow Finance Minister David Burt sent me this link: http://www.parliament.bm/uploadedFiles/Content/House_Business/Bills/Gaming%20Referendum%20Bill%202012.pdf
It is a referendum bill that the PLP introduced last year and the question is very simple: A referendum shall be held on the following question: “Should there be licensed
casino gaming in Bermuda?”.

Seems like I am not the only one thinking this: http://bernews.com/2013/12/more-neutral-wording-for-gambling-referendum/

  1. The question is loaded, and I think its clear to see that it is.

I’m not sure that: “…..for the purposes of creating new jobs for Bermudians and encouraging hotel development.” is at all appropriate for a referendum question.

It seems more like a push poll question, designed to elicit a response. Its also meant to drive a positive narrative. In my view those arguments should be made outside of the question, in the public education campaign and NOT in the question.

    1. I agree. The question should be straight forward and then the respective sides make their arguments. This question is a no-brainer and will skew the result. It is basically emotional blackmail.

  2. It shows a definitive lack of trust in Bermudians believing in them. They keep on dangling this carrot about Jobs in front of people. Last year it was vote for us we will create 2,000 jobs. this year is vote for gambling we will create jobs.
