30 years

After 30 years in the media business, here and in the UK, I find myself out of work.
For the last six months I was the Acting Editor of Bermuda’s daily newspaper, The Royal Gazette, and before that I was the Assistant Editor and News Editor.
Before that is a very long story….
Blogging, therefore, is a new venture for me (as you can tell by my blog site…) but I want to continue posting my thoughts as I did when writing editorials for The Royal Gazette.
I hold no fear and give no favours (one of my mantras when at the newspaper) and will commentate, criticise or praise as I see fit.
(I should stress at this point that the views here are my own. Don’t sue me, I have no money….)
Over time I hope I will be able to improve this site – in terms of its looks and interactivity, but at the moment I am finding my way, so please be patient with me.
It came as quite a shock to be suddenly out of work and I really appreciate the many messages of support I received. It made the pill easier to swallow.
As a journalist, what was interesting was not making the news (which I did for a day – more than 15 minutes!) it was the way I made the news.
No reporters came round, none phoned. Two contacted me via FB or Twitter and then just took what I had written anyway when I declined to comment. Apparently one news outfit made allegations about me, but never sought my comment on them.
While FB and Twitter can be a journalist’s dream, I was surprised at how it was being used. Frankly, it was lazy journalism.
But perhaps, at least in local newspapers, that is the way it is going. Cutbacks and the need to post an eye watering profit margin are squeezing journalism. It is just a shame that there is no-one to tell the modern young journalist that there is nothing wrong with getting on their bike to get a story….
In time I may give more details about my departure from The Royal Gazette, although time does heal. So we will see.
In the meantime I am looking forward to writing again and getting away from the all-consuming HR work, the pointless meetings, the aggravation, the stress and the interference.
And, I am really enjoying time with my family – real, quality time.
